Flossing – An Overview
Flossing is a technique to clean the plaque and residue from the lining of the teeth and gums that are accumulated from the food particles that we consume every day. Just like brushing, teeth flossing is also an essential element of oral hygiene. Despite knowing that flossing is necessary for oral health; most of us are unaware about the right way to floss our teeth.
When Can You Floss?
Oral hygiene is as important as our daily life activities just like bathing and other body cleaning activities. Flossing is that oral cleansing technique that cleanses the food particles and plaque in between the teeth and the gum line. It can be done either in the morning or in the evening according to your own convenience. This process is unique and delicate in the sense that even a little bit carelessness may cause trauma to your teeth causing bleeding, pain etc. Therefore it is at best advisable that you do your flossing in the evening when you are not in much of a hurry!
Before brushing, a teeth floss would clean all the germs and bacteria in between the teeth. After that when you brush, all the remaining food residue and bacteria get cleaned completely.
Your Step by Step Guide to Floss Correctly
1. Take The Right Quantity of Floss
Flossing is done with the help of floss strings which are easily available in your nearest medical store. If you are not able to decide upon the right brand and quality of floss string brand, then you need to consult with your dentist to provide you with a good one.
So before starting the dental floss, your primary duty is to get the right floss string. Also, the floss size and quantity is important to know how much string is necessary for a single flossing time. According to the dentist an 18 to 20 inches of floss is a good one enough for each flossing session.
For flossing, you need to break at least 18 to 20 inches of floss and wind it around your middle fingers of both the hands. Then with the help of the index finger and your thumb grasp one to two inches of the floss between your teeth for the cleaning process. Each time when one teeth and gum line is done, the used portion of the floss needs to be dispensed by rolling it in with the help of your middle fingers again.
2. Slide it, Don’t Pop it
After getting the floss string you slide it in between two teeth in order to clean the plaque and food residue which get stuck in that space after chewing. You need to be very gentle while sliding the floss in between your teeth one by one. Keep yourself safe while you are doing this.
The right style of flossing consists of rubbing your teeth area by sliding the floss in the C shape. It then needs to be turned to another side of teeth in the C shape so that the other side of teeth area is also cleaned. The floss ideally needs to be slided in a zigzag motion. Popping in between the teeth by floss does not give a proper and complete teeth cleaning. For a better and complete cleaning of teeth, it is essential to start cleaning from a fixed place as it will keep you from chances of missing the cleaning of certain teeth.
3. Gums Cleaning
Only teeth cleaning does not imply complete oral hygiene. You need to go a step further to protect your teeth from decay or complete loss. You are required to take good care of your gums in order to do that.
For this purpose your floss needs to be placed in the base of teeth where it meets the gum line. This ensures cleaning the plaque and food particles stuck in gums. Gum cleaning is best possible by making a cup through floss around each teeth base.
4. Don’t Reuse the Same Floss
Regular use of floss strings lead to the accumulation of food residue and bacteria in the strings. So for ensuring optimal oral hygiene the repetitive use of your floss can contaminate the other teeth with the bacteria that has stayed back in your floss strings.
Importance Of Flossing
If you are under the impression that simply brushing your teeth twice daily is enough to keep your mouth healthy and clean, you are heavily mistaken. Tooth brushing solely can’t protect you from dental diseases and other oral concerns.
Some of the virtues of teeth flossing are:
1. It’s Often More Effective than Brushing
Flossing is effective and beneficial than the brushing in more than one ways! Brushing has its own loopholes, no matter even if you are doing it twice regularly. A toothbrush cannot enter into the hairline narrow area between two teeth also it cannot clean under the gums too. A floss can easily enter between the teeth area and reach up to the gum lines where most of the food particles remain stuck causing plaque and other gum diseases. Toothbrush bristles are unable to reach these sites and here lies the importance of flossing!
2. Prevents Other Health Issues too
Gum and teeth disorders are not encompassed within the purview of oral concerns only. A long-lasting oral issue like teeth discoloration, swollen gums, foul smell in the mouth etc. gives rise to other health issues too. Bacteria that builds up within the mouth, breeds and spreads gradually affecting other parts of the body too causing severe health concerns like respiratory problems, diabetes and heart diseases.
The risk of these chronic health concerns can be reduced considerably by flossing teeth every day. Floss not keeps your teeth clean but also prevents gum inflammation and soreness.
3. Saves Your Dental Expenses
Keeping your teeth as well as gums in a healthy state would in the long run imply cutting down on your number of dental visits as well as the expenditures for the same. Moreover, since the overall health concerns are interrelated, flossing can in fact let you keep your other medical expenses under a check too.
It is essential to keep yourself updated about the ways and needs of the flossing procedure, especially because only tooth brushing is simply not a sufficient measure for taking care of your oral health. Make sure that you add flossing to your regular teeth care regime besides brushing or using a mouthwash. It will not only save on your dental expenses but other expenditures too.
